A large audience of gathered to view the multimedia presentation on Focus on Haiti: The UWI Mona-Haiti Initiative, a presentation on the University’s Assistance Programme to Haitian Libraries and Archives following the January 12 Earthquake. This took place on Wednesday December 1, 2010 at 3:30 pm in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI.

The Presenters, John Aarons University Archivist, Dunstan Newman Preservation Librarian, and David Brown, a Binder spoke on the preservation challenges facing the National Library and National Archives of Haiti based on their visit to Haiti to conduct training courses. A featured discussant, Mr. Andieuvil Blanc, a librarian from the National Library of Haiti, now on attachment at the UWI Library, spoke from the perspective of his institution and showed a short video of the actual earthquake tremors in the National Library as captured by the Library’s security cameras.


Dr Matthew Smith, the Director of the UWI Mona-Haiti Initiative spoke on the importance of this programme, which is intended to help safeguard Haitian heritage, within the context of UWI-Mona’s overall assistance programme to Haiti.
