On June 24, 2011 in a short but very symbolic ceremony, attended by the Vice-Chancellor, other senior University officials and the Prime Minister of Jamaica, ground was formally broken for the Vice Chancellery building being constructed opposite to the main entrance of the Mona Campus.
The University Archives has a vested interest in the new building for it will be housed on the ground floor of the two storey structure – incidentally close to where the ground breaking ceremony took place – when the building is completed which is expected to be in March 2012. This move is being eagerly anticipated by the staff of the Archives as the institution has been housed in temporary accommodation for the almost fifteen years it has been in existence. However the staff realizes that along with optimum accommodation and state of the art facilities go greater responsibility to archival development in the region. This would be in keeping with an objective of the new building which is to provide adequate space for the co-coordinating arm of the UWI to be more effective in being a regional resource for assisting member states in their development programmes.
