The UWI Regional Headquarters Building in which the University Archives is now housed, was officially opened by Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Miller-Simpson on 27 June, 2012.
In an impressive ceremony on the lawns close to the East wing of the building, several speakers, including Sir George Alleyne, Chancellor of The University of the West Indies; Professor E. Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, H.E. Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Secretary General of Caricom, Dr. Warren Smith, President of the Caribbean Development Bank, and Professor Sir Hilary Beckles Pro Vice Chancellor and Campus Principal, paid tribute to the contribution of the University to regional development. They all recognized that the building was intended to further the progress of regional integration.
The building houses offices of the central administration of the University such as the office of the Vice Chancellor, the University Registrar, University Bursar, the Boards of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies as well as entities such as the Centre for Latin American Studies and UWI Consulting Services. Not to be forgotten also are the new University Museum and the University Archives.
The Archives is located on the ground floor of the East Wing and the members of staff have been busy organizing the materials in the new repositories which have state of the art equipment to ensure the long term preservation of the archival collections. The collection of the Archives has already been expanded as it acquired over 130 linear feet of records from departments and other entities of the Vice Chancellery as they went through their records in preparation for the move.
In addition to the above, we are automating our finding aids to provide a more effective service to our users and we hope to provide more information on this development shortly.
