Nelson Mandela & The UWI

The University of the West Indies joins with the rest of the world in paying tribute to Nelson Mandela on his ninety-fifth birthday. The University recalls with pleasure his visit to the Mona Campus on July 24th 1991 when he was conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).

His thoughts on this historic occasion are contained in the comments he wrote in the official Visitors Book. He said “To receive a honorary degree from this famous centre of learning is tremendous inspiration to the South African Anti-Apartheid Struggle.

Winnie Mandala, his then wife who accompanied him, said in her comments “With love and gratitude from millions of oppressed Women of South Africa.”

The Visitors Book which contains these comments and signatures is now in the University Archive, having been retired early in 2013. In its pages one gets snapshots of the many world leaders and other prominent persons who visited the University since 1952 when the book started. The comments and signatures of the Mandelas are a small reminder of their visit to our institution and the book itself will be greatly treasured.
