December at the University of the West Indies, especially at Mona, is marked by two yearly occurrences: examinations and end of year celebrations. Having done a thorough search of our holdings, it was found that there were more records on examinations than on end of year celebrations. But it is a fact, that the Yuletide season was celebrated with the official Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, concerts, and dinners.
Thankfully, our colleagues and friends at the UWI Mona Main Library, in their digital collections, have proof that Christmas celebrations were as robust as the regulations and procedures established for the examination period. To celebrate the end of another academic semester and a challenging calendar year, we feature two photographs from the Main Library’s UWI Historical Photograph Collection. This database of digitized photographs illustrate the social and intellectual life of the Mona Campus, especially in the formative years. We are grateful to the Campus Librarian and Librarian for West Indies and Special Collections for the privilege of sharing these snippets of life at the University at Christmas. Here we see robed members of the University community enjoying good food and company.
May this historical experience be yours in days to come!
