Effective 30 April, 2015, the Seventh Vice Chancellor of The UWI, Professor E. Nigel Harris enters honourable retirement after eleven (11) years at the helm of university leadership. Vice Chancellor (VC) Harris was very supportive of the University Archives and Records Management Programme, with the University Archives at Mona being the beneficiary of his attention. He was very passionate about the importance and value of records to the University.
VC Harris was a regular visitor to the University Archives, often unannounced. On the fateful day in June 2010,when a fire erupted in the archival repository, VC Harris was one of the first university officials on site. He maintained contact and interest in the sustainable care of the university’s memory, when the Archives was moved to a temporary facility, a former staff house and was very support of us during those days of recovery.
Among the Vice Chancellor’s many notable achievements is the state of the art archival repository which forms part of the Vice Chancellery’s Regional Headquarters Building. VC Harris was clear that the University Archives, with its new sibling the University Museum, would have pride of place in the Regional Headquarters Building. Not surprisingly, VC Harris spontaneously toured the Archives following our move to the building
Another spontaneous visit by the VC triggered the expansion and re-conceptualisation of the University Archives’ role, which resulted in the transfer of the audiovisual “Library of the Spoken Word” Collection to the custody of the University Archives and the formation of a Digital Media Laboratory in the Archives. VC Harris would be remembered for his drive and interest in seeking support for the digital preservation of this Collection.
The University Archives thanks Vice Chancellor Harris for his interest in, passion, and support for the University Archives and we wish him a long, healthy and enjoyable retirement.
