November

Stanley Griffin, Assistant Archivist, attended the IXth Meeting of the Caribbean Branch of the International Council of Archives CARBICA in Port of Spain Trinidad. The quad-annual meeting of CARBICA in Trinidad provided an opportunity for archivists around the region, as far north as Haiti and as southerly as Suriname, to meet, discuss and network.  This meeting dealted with two vital aspects of the archival profession, namely: disaster preparedness and electronic records management, which were the focus of two workshops.

A group of first year undergraduate Library Studies students, along with their lecturer, Dr. Paulette Kerr, toured the University Archives. There the group examined and discussed the differences between Libraries and Archives.

Seven  graduate students in the MA Heritage Studies programme visited the University Archives as part of the Archives Module taught by Mr John Aarons, University Archivist.

APRIL

Along with a number of other Caribbean Archivists, John Aarons attended the opening of the new National Archives building in Paramaribo, Suriname on April 12, 2010.  As part of the activities surrounding the opening of the new building the National Archives organized an international conference on Managing Public Records in a Digital Era/Electronic Environment: new perspectives/challenges.  John Aarons attended the conference and participated by presenting a paper on The Role of Digitization in E-government.
